Raphaël Moniz-Laflamme

Professional Overview

Raphaël Moniz-Laflamme is the head of research and development at Cryos, an SME specializing in advanced podiatry technologies and the design of custom orthotics. As a junior engineer (CPI), he plans, coordinates, and oversees the company’s innovation projects, including the integration of new production technologies and the optimization of manufacturing processes.

With a background in mechanical engineering, he works at the intersection of advanced design, medical technology, and industrial automation. His work involves organizing complex technical projects and translating clinical or operational needs into concrete, robust, and manufacturable solutions.

Education & Professional Background

A mechanical engineering graduate from the University of Sherbrooke, Raphaël has developed expertise in mechanical design, finite element analysis (FEA), numerical simulation, and engineering project management. He also served as a teaching assistant in technical drawing during his time at university.

He is a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs du Québec as a candidate for the engineering profession (CPI). Prior to joining Cryos, he gained diverse experience in the medical and industrial sectors. At PPD Meditech, he contributed to the design and optimization of orthopedic implants and machining tools.

At EncephalX, a biomedical startup, he contributed to the development of a neurosurgical device, performing advanced modeling, numerical simulations, and drafting specifications in compliance with regulatory standards. He also worked in product development at NOVO and in industrial process optimization at Bridgestone Canada. Internationally, he led the technical aspects of a solar electrification project in Benin.

Expertise in Foot Biomechanics & Medical Technology

At Cryos, Raphaël applies his expertise in mechanical design and automation to the field of foot biomechanics and the modernization of manufacturing processes for custom orthotics.

He works on both clinical data capture tools and industrial production systems. He contributes to the improvement of manufacturing processes through the integration of industrial 3D printing technologies, the comparative analysis of technical solutions, process automation, and the development of parametric design tools.

He also led initiatives to adapt measurement equipment to emerging clinical recommendations, ensuring alignment between scientific requirements and manufacturing feasibility.

Role at Cryos

As R&D Manager, Raphaël oversees the company’s technological innovation initiatives.

He is involved in the selection and implementation of strategic industrial equipment, including industrial 3D printers and finishing and inspection systems. He also helps plan manufacturing spaces designed to accommodate the growth in production capacity.

In the orthotics manufacturing department, he developed and implemented automation programs to increase productivity and reduce quality variations. These initiatives included the implementation of CNC cutting programs integrated into the production workflow and employee training.

He also plays a role in improving internal design tools, calibrating equipment, and optimizing quality control systems to ensure accuracy and reproducibility.

He also helps organize funded R&D projects and mentors engineering interns, contributing to the development of internal technical capabilities.

Approach & Professional Philosophy

Raphaël takes a structured and analytical approach to innovation. He prioritizes a thorough understanding of the clinical context before proceeding with any technical or manufacturing implementation.

He believes that the advancement of podiatry depends on the intelligent integration of digital and manufacturing technologies, combined with high standards of quality, precision, and reproducibility.
